10/16/2023At Heathridge Primary School we have a strong focus on providing students with the opportunity to enhance their creative skills through Design and Technology, as well as preparing them for the digital future. Students have access to iPads with a variety of applications, an extensive computer lab and coding equipment.
We build computer literacy skills so students are able to use the internet safely and explore the world of unplugged and plugged coding. At Heathridge Primary School, our students utilise the properties of Design and Technology through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities. This process incorporates selecting, planning, creating, reflecting and improving projects.
We know that coding is the language of computers and a vital skill to learn for our students' future endeavours in the 21st Century. "Coding sparks creativity, inspiration and innovation - all of which are essential in any career".

Digital innovation continues to reshape our world, from the way we communicate and learn, to the jobs we do, and the decisions we make. At Heathridge Primary school, we embrace change, delivering an education experience that is connected, informed and empowered. We have a fully equipped computer Lab as well as a one-to- two iPad program for all students to access. Embedding technology into learning programs creates a more engaged environment, encouraging active participation in the classroom. Observed benefits of technology include:
- Incorporating different learning styles - Each child learns differently. Technology allows teachers to easily adjust learning plans to meet the diverse and individual needs of the students in the classroom.
- Improves Collaboration - Teachers have observed an increased frequency of students helping each other, learning from themselves and each other. Our technology and software allow students work collaboratively on documents, digitally sharing and collaborating on classroom platforms. Students have many options provided, such as online platforms, apps, software, and devices, that can facilitate different types of interactions.
- Supports Inclusivity- assistive technology takes away barriers for students with diverse learning needs. HPS provides students access to assistive technology including speech to text software, document cameras, C-Pens and speech to text headphone sets.
- Differentiation - technology allows for quick access for students to work independently at their required level. The school uses educational programs which places students in instruction at their skill level and that are designed to ensure mastery of the content.
- Creativity - Any creative endeavour that calls to a student can be supported by technology. Provided iPads have the capabilities to capture students' sketches. Editing software lets students bring photos to life and manipulate them in creative ways. Technology can enhance creativity rather than inhibit it if students are given choice about what they create.
In addition to the technology above, HPS strives to remain up to date with the latest technology to enhance engagement and provide students with experiences that classrooms cannot provide.
Virtual and Augmented Reality- HPS provides students with access to VR headset and platforms to bring the curriculum to life using virtual and augmented reality experiences, from visiting far-flung corners of the world to holding a human heart in your hands. Virtual reality builds emotional intelligence and further develops a secure foundation of knowledge.
Robotics - Heathridge Primary School students expand, apply, and deepen their knowledge of STEAM concepts through robotics. They build increasing sophistication, independence, and fluency in approaching problems hands-on, and cultivate effective habits of systematic creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Our curriculum includes simple coding progression learned through purposeful play, hands-on activities.
